![]() Minimalist shoes are zero drop and limited cushion so that you have more ground feel. Once you adapt there's no advantage to cushion.Īltra lone peak are zero drop, but they aren't minimalist. ![]() I'm not entirely sure minimalist shoes are FOR EVERYONE, but if they are for you I see no reason to have anything but. Having a drop isn't an option so most other brands of shoe are off the table. I tried altras and they made me feel very unstable. If only having healthy feet wasn't a silly trend. Xero Trail mesas were alright, a little too tough of a sole and too weak of an upper for my liking, but they are probably the best thing out there currently produced that I can say I like. At this point my socks are thicker than the soles and I have no issue running any rocky trail around Phoenix Arizona. After I bought all the trail gloves I could find, I bought all the vapor gloves I could find, and I'm almost out. Old style merrell vapor gloves are my current choice because the Trail gloves aren't what they used to be many generations ago. Never have I felt a different shoe would have gotten me farther, aside from straight rock climbing. My feet delicately feel where I am and react accordingly. Yes, sometimes Id like my feet to be less sore, or warmer, or to have a stronger toe at work, but those things come with drawbacks. The whole point of minimalist shoes is to get you feeling the trail and using that to your advantage. If you only wear minimalist shoes on the daily I don't know why you would swap out to something less familiar for backpacking, or any other activity. It doesn't matter because my feet and legs are now conditioned to do the work. Working as a contractor, walking the dog, trail running, rock hopping. If you're willing to go for a running shoe, have a look at Vivo Primus Trail FG, Xeroshoes Mesa Trail and Joe Nimble TrailToes (or smth?). That said, I know many have liked theirs a lot, my issues probably come from the fit.Ī somewhat similar, much better shoe in my opinion is the Joe Nimble WanderToes. I used them as casual winter/autumn shoes for three years, glueing the sole/leather connection many times. ![]() The sole started to separate from the leather pretty soon. They felt stiff on the ankle (wrong place!) and I couldn't get the heel to lock well. I got them to try if they would be a solution for the third scenario, and their membranes failed the second week I had them. Now, specifically, I had a pair of Vivo Trackers, previous FG-model I think, and I hated them. Weight of my backpack isn't really a factor in my experience. ![]() Third, if there's a lot of wet snow and it's deep, I'd love something which doesn't let water flow freely through. I wouldn't want cushioning or any real stack, just some stiffness. Second, if I'm scambling up something very rocky, I'd love if my shoes were a bit tighter and stiffer. First, during extended ON-trail stretches, my feet feel pounded, and I would be willing to trade some stability for some cushioning. There are three hiking conditions when I'd like to have something else than a minimalist trail runner. I dislike high stacks, they make me feel less stable. Never worn Altra, can't comment on those. I like trail runners from Xeroshoes and Vivobarefoot. Mine: minimalist shoes are what I use basically always, outside of ski-hiking season.
